To celebrate our 20th year, SAMAR collaborates with the SAADA, the South Asian American Digital Archives! Check out an issue from 2002!
The South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA) is a national non-profit organization based in Philadelphia with a mission to document, preserve and provide access to South Asian American history through an online digital archive, freely accessible at http://www.saadigitalarchive.org. In collaboration with the SAMAR Magazine collective, SAADA will be working to provide online access to the back issues of SAMAR Magazine that were originally published in print. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first publication of SAMAR Magazine. Issues 1 to 15, published between 1992 and 2002, include articles, interviews, photographs, fiction, poetry and much more that help to provide a snapshot of concerns, questions and stories from the progressive South Asian American community.
Over the last three years, SAADA has collected nearly 1,500 unique archival items that help uncover hidden narratives from the history of South Asians in the United States. Stories such as that of the Ghadar Party, an organization based in San Francisco founded in 1913 to agitate for Indian independence from the British; of the Watumull family, one of the first South Asian families to settle in Hawaii; and, of Dalip Singh Saund, who in 1956 became the first Asian American elected to the U.S. Congress. All of these materials are available online without cost to anyone, anywhere at any time through the SAADA website at http://www.saadigitalarchive.org
SAADA and SAMAR need your help! If you have print issues of SAMAR Magazine (Issues 1 to 15) in your possession that you would be willing to lend to SAADA for digitizing and presentation online, please email Samip Mallick at samip@saadigitalarchive.org
We hope that you'll enjoy Issue #15 of SAMAR Magazine < http://www.saadigitalarchive.org/item/20120614-707 >, first published in Fall/Summer 2002, and look forward to more back issues of SAMAR to be online in the coming months!
